20th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration

Join the City of Chicago Heights at the 20th Annual celebration of the life and enduring legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. taking place Monday, January 16th at the Chicago Heights Public Library. The event features several speakers and performances in honor of Dr. King's legacy.
Talei Thompson, a local motivational speaker, will take the podium as the keynote speaker, with additional guest speaker Richard Schwoegler III, founder  and director of Surrender All Ministries. The morning program also includes a performance by God’s Purpose Praise Dance Group.
The essay contest winners from Bloom High School will be recognized, along with the recipients of the Civic Organization of the Year Award, Humanitarian of the Year Award, and Educator of the Year Award.

Meaningful Ways to Celebrate MLK Day

In addition to our annual celebration of Dr. King, there are also a number of events honoring his life and influence.

           Chicago History Museum
           January 16th, 2017
  
A celebration of the life and legacy of Dr. King featuring music performances, craft activities, storytelling and more. Visitors can enjoy a production of “The MLK Project: The Fight for Civil Rights,” by Writers Theatre and a musical performance by the Chicago Chamber Choir, along with storytelling and crafts for kids that reflect Dr. King’s messages of peace and justice. Award-winning storyteller Oba William King will perform a reenactment of Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech.

           January 16, 2017

The Chicago Zoological Society will celebrate Dr. Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Day through musical presentations by Chicago Metamorphosis Orchestra Project and Shift: Englewood Youth Orchestra. Plus, a special presentation by Rev. Debra Williams.

           Forest Preserves of Cook County
           January 16th, 2017

Join us for a volunteer day of service at Dan Ryan Woods in celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s Birthday. Try your hand at restoration by helping remove invasive plants while learning about efforts being made to maintain healthy habitats. Warm up with a hot drink and a brush pile burn while also enjoying some winter family-fun activities.           Art Institute of Chicago

Hear a reading of a new children's book A Gift From Greensboro by author Quraysh Ali Lansana and experience performances by young poets from Reborn Poetry Ensemble. Participate in collaborative art-making with artist Indira Freitas Johnson, enjoy art chats with teen interns about art on view and more.

Resident Services Department

The City of Chicago Heights Resident Services Department is the central intake center for resident questions, concerns, and requests for city services. Residents may call or visit Resident Services to voice a concern or make an inquiry. Resident Services forwards the necessary information to the appropriate department for follow-up. Since the launch of the new city website last year, Resident Services has been able to open another more dynamic communication platform for residents. From the home page of the website, residents can access the “Request for Services” link. The resident will be directed to an internal page that will allow the request to be reported electronically. Click the green circle above to try out this feature.
